Pakistan becomes third largest rice exporting country: TDAP: The Nation

ISLAMABAD (APP) - Chief Executive of Trade Development Authority Of Pakistan (TDAP) Syed Muhaibullah Shah has said that Pakistan becomes the third largest rice exporting country in the world.
Talking to CNBC he said that Pakistan is the 12th largest rice producer in the world, however, due to best marketing and value addition, the country has achieved this position in the international markets,. He pointed out that country’s rice exports remained the second largest foreign exchange earner for the country after cotton.
“This is a great achievement and country’s rice sector achieved this position despite global recession, financial crunch and a very tough price competition in the international markets,” he added.
He said that the rice exporters adopted best strategy and explored new markets all over the world.
He advised the rice exporters to focus more on Asian and African markets to increase their exports. He pointed out that purchasing power in Asia is increasing and these markets could be more attractive for rice exports in future. “We should also focus the African markets, which have huge potential for our commodities mainly for rice exports”, he added.

Rice exports cross $2 billion mark: Pakistan Observer

Karachi —Despite global recession, financial crunch and strong competition in the international markets, Pakistan’s rice exports have crossed the $2 billion mark in the current fiscal year.

According to the data available here, Pakistan exported a total of 2.896 million tons rice to different countries in the period from July 1, 2008 to June 27, 2009. Out of the total exports, Pakistan exported 909,709 million Basmati rice worth $995,995,749 while 1,987,137 tons non-Basmati rice worth $1,004,243,092 was exported in this period.

Although this figure is slightly less than previous fiscal year’s exports of $2.2 billion, however, it is a big achievement for the country, Abdul Rahim Janoo, Chairman Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (Reap) said this at a luncheon meeting with the Chairperson of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) Nasreen Haq, here on Saturday.

Pakistan earns $394m more from rice export: The Nation

KARACHI - Pakistan earned $394 million more from the export of the rice during nine months (July-March) of the current financial year 2008-09.
The total export of rice increased to $1.339 billion in nine months of current fiscal year 08-09 against $945m of same period of last fiscal year 07-08. Rice is the dominated food staple in exportable food commodity and it has importance in the exports commodities as country earns significant foreign exchange every year. Though, the export of the rice has increased during nine months over same period of last year as history making prices of the commodity in international as well as in local market had encouraged the growers who switched over to rice even in cotton growing-areas.
Due to attracting prices, the growers and exporters were eying of over 6m tons production in current crop season of FY2008-09 but emergent fall of rain had badly impacted on production and yield of the crop in the country. Resultantly, the output of the crop reduced to 5.6m tons in current season of FY2008-09.

Europe buyers skip India, buy basmati from Pakistan: The News

NEW DELHI: European traders have bought 80,000 tonnes of basmati rice from Pakistan in the last 10-15 days, sidestepping India’s new season crop because of higher prices, a senior industry official said on Tuesday.Gurnam Arora, joint managing director of Kohinoor Foods and former president of the All India Rice Exporters Association, told Reuters Indian exporters lost out largely because of an export duty of $200 a tonne imposed in April.

He said Indian basmati rice was quoting between $1,400 to $1,500 per tonne, about $400 to $500 above Pakistani prices.“Traditionally, our rice is usually priced about $200 more than the Pakistani rice,” he said. “We have requested the government to remove the export tax as Pakistan is eating into our share.”“There is no sense in this duty,” Arora said, adding that Indian rice stocks were comfortable.India had also banned the export of non-basmati rice in April.The country exported about 1.5 million tonnes of basmati rice in the year to March 31, 2008, out of total exports of 5.5 million tonnes of rice.

Pakistan to pip India in list of world's top rice exporters: Economic Times

NEW DELHI: For the first time in several years Pakistan is expected to pip India in the list of rice exporting countries because of export curb imposed here. According to the latest report of the US Agriculture Department (USDA), India will lose two ranks in the list to become the fourth largest rice exporter in calendar year 2008 while Pakistan would improve its position to third. In the USDA list of world's top 15 rice exporting countries, Thailand will remain at the top with an estimated 10 million export followed by Vietnam at 4.7 million tons. The report said Pakistan may export 3 million tons while India 2.8 million tons in 2008. India's rice exports may further take a dip to two million tons in 2009 while Pakistan will raise its overseas supply to 3.15 million tons, it said. Incidentally, this development has come in the 61st year of independence as both countries were liberated from the British rule in 1947. Commenting on the development, All India Rice Exporters Association President Vijay Sethia said, "India lost the opportunity which Pakistan and Vietnam took."
